To get the most out of your quad experience, the Federation recommends taking an ATV rider course after which you will receive your certificate of competence and knowledge. It should be reminded that this certification is mandatory for users aged 16 or 17, as well as club members using a modified cargo box seat.
For an $85 fee, the 4 to 6 hours training can be taken in every region in Québec, and is delivered by instructors certified by the Canada Safety Counsel. Participants must provide their equipment: vehicle, helmet, gloves and boots. A valid ID must also be presented to confirm the driver’s age in case of a minor (16 or 17).
The Fédération des clubs quads du Québec is an agent of the Government of Québec for off-road driving training.

To operate an off-highway vehicle on a public highway as provided in this Act, a person must hold a licence authorizing him under the Highway Safety Code to drive a road vehicle on such a highway and must comply with the conditions and restrictions attached to the licence.. »

Act respecting off-highway vehicles, article 21.1
« Despite section 21, a quad bike on which the manufacturer has not installed a passenger seat may be modified to add one provided it is installed according to the instructions and recommendations of the seat manufacturer.
An operator of a vehicle modified in accordance with the first paragraph must hold a certificate obtained from an officer authorized by the Government attesting that the operator has the competence and knowledge required to operate such a vehicle when transporting a passenger. The Canadian AQCC Safety Institute (CASI) – a division of the All-Terrain Quad Council of Canada (AQCC) – has joined forces with the ATV Safety Institute (ASI) and the Canadian Off-Highway Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV) to offer CASI’s new ATV RiderCourse.
The hands-on training allows students to expand their security knowledge and to practice basic driving skills in a controlled environment under supervision by a certified instructor.

Complete an efficient vehicle inspection before any expedition to ensure a safe travel and prevent any unexpected mechanical issues.

Fully master control positions to develop adequate reactions during driving
Starting and Stopping the ATV
Master engine start-up, moving and stopping the vehicle to ensure proper control during training
Getting in Gear and Shifting
Learn about the transmission and variable gear ratios

Get trained on different breaking techniques to assure secure stoping in various conditions.
Handling Strategies
Study different driving techniques with illustrations and context to asses correctly the landscape while traveling off-road and adapt the best handling strategy
Turning, Sharp Turns and Sudden Breaking
Understand and exercise weight transfer to correctly negotiate turns with a vehicle without a differential.
Quick stops, Straight Lines and Corners
Become familiar with vehicle operations in a context of emergency in various situations.
Emergency Breaking
Immobilize the ATV with a quick stop while performing an avoiding action.
Negotiate Obstacles
Learn proper techniques to negotiate various obstacles without incident.
Safe Driving Practices; Environment Issues
Take part in a group discussion about rules of safety and conduct, and areas where circulation is allowed.
Crossing Hills
Practice riding on rugged terrain while applying weight transfer and precise driving.
Driving in the Trails
Circulate in trails with the instructor to get familiarized with different rules and signage in effect.
